Note | The supply covers the Cold Test of 10 TF COILS Winding Packs (WP) and the insertion of the Winding Packs into the Coil Cases. The TF coils are composed of a winding pack (superconducting magnet) and stainless steel coil cases. They are designed to have a total magnetic energy of 41 gigajoules, they will be made of cable-in-conduit superconductors, in which a bundle of superconducting strands is cabled together, compacted into a stainless steel conduit, and cooled by supercritical helium. Each TF COIL will have a weight of over 300 tons and a size of about 14 m x 9 m. The exceptional size and weight of the components, the criticality of the materials employed and of the Winding Packs, the high profile technologies needed and the many interfaces, make this contract as one of the most challenging for Fusion For Energy. These magnets will produce a magnetic field around the torus, whose primary function is to confine the plasma particles. The TF coils will weigh altogether 6,540 tons and besides the vacuum vessel, they are the biggest components of the ITER machine. This contract was signed in May 2014 and will last until 2024. |
